Singing audition

When choosing songs it’s a lot more difficult to choose songs for auditions than choosing songs to practice with so you’ll probably want some singing audition tips. You want to practice songs that expand and challenge your vocal technique. Just remember that audition songs should highlight your strengths and accomplishments.

The best scenario for your audition is to have one ballad and one song that is up-tempo. Utilizing songs with stories and range should be a priority in your decision making. Singers are usually ballad lovers or ballad haters. If balads are not your cup of tea, then it’ll be tough choosing a ballad to sing. If you are an up-tempo lover, find a ballad that suits you and really dig into it as an actor to find a reason to croon those words, and then the slow tempo won’t seem so eternally long. Choosing the songs will probably be the hardest part of your audition. The songs you choose should be songs that truly show off your talents. This artful skill takes time to develop, so keep looking at songs to continue expanding your book of songs.

Variety is the spice of life, and your choice of songs should offer variety. This will allow you to bring forth a well-balanced set of songs. Song number one can be a song that shows off glorious high notes and song number two may have a sassy belt that shows off your ability to change gears quickly.

Showing off your strengths as a singer will be easy if you have more variety. If each of your songs has a narrow range, search for songs that allow you to show off some high notes right after you sing your belt song. Remember when you’re dealing with range, be sure to demonstrate the lowest and highest points that feel comfortable. One thing to remember is you definitely don’t want to have each song bring the same kind of character.

At many musical theater auditions, you may be asked to sing a pop song, but to show a variety of song styles, you want to have early musical theater songs, later songs, and pop/rock songs, too. Many times singers will confine themselves to contemporary songs. Hey, it’s a great choice, but there is a lot to be said for a singer who can portray an earlier time period.

Once you walk through the door everyone will have their eyes on you, even before you sing. Show them how great you look in your outfit and remember that personality and charisma will set you apart from everyone else. Think about what the character looks like. One thing to remember is that while you do want to suggest the character of the songs you choose to sing, don’t dress exactly like them. It also important to understand that you may not be offered the part straight away. Sometimes directors ask you back to audition again so make sure that you’re outstanding every time you audition and not just on a good day.
